Iron wood Forest (Na - Forest)

The NA Tree is a valuable resource which provides an excellent service not only for the people but also for the environment. These trees have expanded over 260 acres of land it is a marvelous scene to have a breath taking look at how they have stretched in that area. NA tree has got a peculiar smell which will enable anybody to sense that NA tree or trees are around. Botanically, NA tree is called “Mesua Ferara” and in English it is called the Iron Wood Tree. The group of NA trees are called Clusaiaceae or Guttiriferae. This significant tree is a native to Sri Lanka, India, Malayasia, Buruma, Thailand, and Papua Neviginnia.

 Buddhists has a great religious value for NA tree but not only Buddhists other religions also consider it as a sacred resource. It is also a meditation centre for the Buddhist monks around the island and other parts of the world. Iron Wood forest is a unique forest in Sri Lanka where the Iron Wood trees dominate the vegetation of the 260 acres of forest. The whole part of NA is also used herbal medicines and soaps, perfumes, and cosmetics. This was named as the national tree of Sri Lanka. It has been chosen as the national tree for seven reasons.

1.  It is a tree which originated in Sri Lanka.
2.  Its utilities
3.  Historical and cultural importance
4.  Exterior posture.
5.  Wide distribution.
6.  Color and nature.
7.  Ability to draw and sketch it easily.

This tree grows in mountain places, about 1200mts. above Sea level. The leaves of NA tree is long about 17 cm. and wide about 2 cm., the flower blooms lonely and Diya NA flowers bloom in bunches. NA tree has beautiful bright red leaves and finally matures into deep green shades. NA timber is very hard and have high durability.  These woods are not used to build houses and other buildings. They are used to make Devalayas, Temples, Kovil etc.  But now cutting or un-rooting of NA trees are prohibited because of it’s religious and medicinal values.

Ayurveda has subdivided the trees with medicinal values by categorizing them in different ‘Gothras’ and they have categorized NA tree in Nagasekara Gothra. A few of the medicinal values of NA tree are; it can stop bleeding, can cure saliva problems, cure stomach problems, controls over-sweating in the body etc etc.  NA tree seeds are used to make medicines for the treatment of skin diseases, various types of fevers, throat pain / cough / vomiting / appetite / breathing / urinary / nerve / heart / sexual and mental problems. The flower of NA tree is used for the treatment of piles also. In addition to that the leaves and flowers of this tree and some other natural extracts mixed together will give back life to the snake bitten people.  Again the leaves of NA tree along with a mixture of Cow milk, coconut milk have miraculously cured too many peoples, un-diagonized diseases. Considering all these past experiences, it is a natural heaven to those who want to explore nature, a place for peace of mind, a place for meditation, and a place to cure your diseases of any kind, being the nature as your doctor.

Even the NA tree forest protects the hot sunlight (this tree grows in a hot climate area)  give it’s shade to all the small medicinal plants living in its shades and makes the feeling to those who visits “her”, that you are in a cool area, like the coolest place in Sri Lanka named (Noorali).  The smallest leaves of this tree, having the purity of new born baby’s lips – the color reddish, resembles to the beautiful ladies lips in Sigiriya which is commonly known (renowned) in Sri Lanka. Unbelievably, there is something divine to this land, with unbelievable natural purity (yes it is a sacred land with all the blessings from the almighty), with an area covering 2000 acres of amid forest, it’s sacred and cultural assets, awarded with the prestigious award “The national tree of Sri Lanka” to NA tree for its exceptional contribution to human civilization on the 26th of February 1986.

You can also find a variety of species in this vast forest, which you may find in the national parks in Sri Lanka, but in fact, this forest has more, than anybody can anticipate due to it’s divinity and natural assets.

You can see a large variety of birds (seasonal, including migrates), until now 60 varieties have been identified by the concerned authorities which includes, common and rare breeds. Another astonishing feature this is a home land for 72 varieties of insects including different types of ants and the exploration will have to continue to find out this lands occupants.
